Fiona Rutherford is a dynamic and experienced tapestry weaver. Given the weaving heritage of St Etienne she is particularly appropriate for this exchange. Internationally renowned, she has work in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, Contemporary Textiles and ACE in London as well as the Elegankobe Japan. She has recently worked in Australia as well as exhibiting at the V&A and Origin in London and Ozone in Tokyo. Her work is brightly coloured and often abstract with a strong Japanese influence.
Fiona Rutherford a une pratique longue et active de la tapisserie. Etant donnée la tradition textile de Saint-Etienne, sa participation à cet échange est particulièrement appropriée. De renommée internationale, ses oeuvres sont exposées au Victoria & Albert Museum et à l’Arts Council England de Londres ainsi qu’au Japan. Récemment, elle a travaillé en Australie, exposé au V&A (Collect 2007), à la London Craft Fair (Somerset House, 2006) et à l’Elegankobe au Japon. Son travail utilise des couleurs vives et des motifs souvent abstraits d’inspiration fortement japonaise.
I would love to be part of a European collaborative project. I think working in partnership with a French designer maker will throw up unknown challenges in communication and creative decisions but this is what makes it interesting. I am a textile artist but I am always looking for new areas to develop my work. I see this as a great opportunity for me to learn from and react to a designer in another medium and I hope that I will be able to inspire my partner in return.
I have exhibited my work internationally but this would be the first time for me to work professionally in France. Japan is a strong source of inspiration for me and over the past years I have regularly visited the country with exhibitions and research trips. Earlier this year I spent six weeks as a visiting artist at the Australian National University in Canberra where I also exhibited my work. (See www.fionatextileartist.blogspot.com for more information) I would like to bring these creative links and experiences to this design collaboration and work on some new ideas closer to home in a European context.
I will be available to travel to France in November and of course my home and studio are open for a return visit in 2009. I think it would be important to maintain regular contact after the first visit to let the collaboration grow steadily. I hope that language won’t be too much of a barrier. I speak very basic French but I would like to learn how to be more fluent in French so if selected I would definitely take classes.
« J’adorerais participer à un projet collaboratif européen. Je pense que travailler en partenariat avec un designer français ouvrira des défis de communication et des choix créatifs inédits mais c’est ce qui donne tout son intérêt au projet. Je travaille dans le domaine du textile mais je suis toujours en quête de nouveaux domaines pour développer mon travail. Je considère ce projet comme une grande chance pour moi car il me permettra à la fois d’apprendre au contact d’un designer travaillant dans un autre champ du design et de réagir par rapport à ses propositions ; en retour, j’espère pouvoir être une source d’inspiration pour la personne avec laquelle je travaillerai.
J’ai exposé mon travail dans le monde entier mais ce serait pour moi la première fois que me serait donnée l’occasion de travailler en France. Le Japon est une influence majeure dans mon travail et ces dernières années je me suis rendue régulièrement dans ce pays dans le cadre d’expositions et de voyages d’étude. En début d’année j’ai fait un séjour de six semaines en tant qu’artiste invitée de l’Australian National University de Canberra (Australie) où j’ai exposé mon travail (pour plus d’informations www.fionatextileartist.blogspot.com). C’est forte de cette expérience et de ces liens créatifs que j’aimerais participer à ce projet collaboratif en travaillant sur des concepts nouveaux et plus familiers dans un cadre européen.
Je pourrai me déplacer en France au mois de novembre et, bien sûr, j’ouvrirai mon atelier et ma maison pour rendre la pareille en 2009. Je crois qu’il sera important de maintenir des contacts réguliers à l’issue de la première rencontre afin que cette collaboration se renforce progressivement. J’espère que la barrière de la langue ne sera pas un trop grand problème : mon français est très rudimentaire mais j’aimerais m’améliorer et je compte bien prendre des cours si je suis sélectionnée ! »
