Fiona Thompson

Fiona Thompson has a conceptual approach to ceramics that currently focuses on travel and souvenirs.  She has recently returned from a residency in America which is reflected in her current work.  She has exhibited widely in the UK  as well as in Greece, Taiwan, USA, Germany and Holland.

“The non-functional ceramic vessel has been my main focus for several years. More recently work has been redeveloped, informed by formal research into aspects of tourism. The overall theme to current work is the use of objects and images to evoke memories of a visit to a particular place; particularly the photographic image and the souvenir. I am interested in how a place is presented to the visitor through such objects, and how this representation compares with reality.

A two month stay in Philadelphia as an artist-in-residence in 2007 has informed my work to date, underpinned by relevant literature. The souvenir has been described as a trigger for memory, and as often having no real function except to store memory. Taking this as a starting point, the forms developed are a direct reference to the souvenir. These include the salt & pepper set, the teatray and the jug. They are intended to be both generic and specific at the same time, referring to the paradox that is common within tourism. The souvenir is often a generic mass produced ‘one-size-fits-all’ object, only specifically linked to its place of reference by the imagery or text on it. It is also often inspired by a recognisable domestic (functional) object such as an egg cup or jug. These characteristics are a key feature of the work, with the forms taking on a specific link to the trip once imagery and text is applied.

Text is mainly selected from guide books and leaflets, and my own notes. It is intended to draw from the universal brochure/guide book language and its way of describing a place or sight. Particularly of interest is the guided walk; a constructed route through an area intended to be of interest to the tourist. The images are selected from photographs taken myself, and occasionally from brochures and guide books.
