Nick James has a high profile in Newcastle as a furniture designer-maker and the founder of the award winning Mushroom works and the Brickworks artists’ studios. He converted 2 old riverside warehouses to create these art-spaces. As a skilled maker trained at Rycotewood College he will bring a high level of craftsmanship to the collaboration.
Nick James est une personnalité de la scène culturelle de Newcastle tant pour son travail de designer que pour sa création de deux pépinières artistiques, Brick Works et Mushroom Works, pour lesquelles il a été primé et qu’il a installées dans deux anciens entrepôts réhabilités. Formé au Rycotewood College d’Oxford, il contribuera à cet échange par ses grandes compétences dans le domaine de l’ébénisterie et de l’artisanat d’art.
“My motivation to be involved in this project is mainly concerned with the possibility to create new work. I am greatly excited by the opportunity to work with other designers and create something in response to their work, and am interested in how they might respond to mine. This is a great opportunity for creative development for me and I look forward to talking and discussing ideas about what a designer-maker is with others from outside of my existing networks. It is a great chance for me to visit the Design Biennial in St Etienne and also to have some of my work featured in Design Event 09 and in exhibitions in France.”
« Ce projet me motive principalement parce qu’il va me permettre de donner une nouvelle orientation à mon travail. La possibilité de travailler avec d’autres designers et de créer un objet en regard de leur travail me motive autant que la réaction qu’ils auront face à mon travail. C’est une occasion majeure pour promouvoir mes créations et j’ai hâte de pouvoir parler de mon travail de designer-créateur et de pouvoir échanger avec des designers travaillant en dehors de mes domaines de création. »
